Chromium Complexes with Hexadentate Bipyridyl Ligands

By using laser flash photoylsis, understanding of mechanistic issues within the cell has improved. A photochemically active reactant is attached to the protein to be studied, photolyzed, and potentially electron transfer occurs from the reactant to the protein. This "activated" protein is complexed with a second protein. The activated protein then transfers an electron to the complexed protein. This reaction is studied spectrophotometrically and gives information on reaction rates between metalloproteins. Typically Ru complexes of bipyridine have been used as the photochemically active reagent. This study will look at Cr complexes of a hexadentate bipyridine ligand as the photochemically active reactant. The hexadentate ligand 1,3,5-tris((5'-methyl-2,2'-bipyridin-5-yl)ethyl)benzene will be used to prevent metal labilization in solution. The advantage to using Cr(III) is longer lifetimes in the excited state. If successful, complexes of Mo and W will be investigated.
