Abstract Dr. N. Reese

Modulation of Spinal Locomotion by Combined Therapies in SCI

The objective of Dr. Reese’s project is to determine the effects of various combinations of exercise, pharmacological agents, and epidural spinal cord stimulation (ESCS) on locomotion following spinal cord injury (SCI) in the rat. Proposed studies will determine the effects of combinations of BETT, L-dopa, and ESCS on hind limb locomotion in spinal transected rats. Specifically, Dr Reese will compare the ability of adult, spinal-transected rats to walk on a treadmill following 1) BETT and ESCS, 2)L-dopa and ESCS, and 3) a combination of BETT, L-dopa, and ESCS. Since preliminary studies indicate that changes in reflex and muscle function are evident after 30 to 90 days of BETT, the treatment period proposed for this project is 60 days. At the end of the treatment period, animals will be tested for locomotor function on a motorized treadmill. Changes in the locomotor step cycle will be analyzed through electromyographic recordings of hindlimb muscle function.
