Abstract Dr. Kazi

Investigation of Nucleotide Triphosphates for Inhabitation of NS3 Helicase from Hepatitis C Virus

The primary goal of this collaborative project will be to enhance biomedical research capabilities at UAPB, increase participation of underrepresented minority students in biomedical research and develop collaborative research proposals to attract external funding at the participating institutions. Dr. Kazi’s research at UAMS will focus on the study of small molecules for their inhibitory activities on the NS3 helicase encoded by the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). The major objectives of this research are (1) chemical synthesis of novel nucleotide triphosphates and (2) evaluation of nucleotide triphosphates as potential inhibitors of the NS# helicases from the Hepatitis C Virus. Dr. Kazi will utilize his experience as a synthetic organic chemist for the synthesis, purification, and characterization of the nucleotide triphosphates. Working in Dr. Raney’s laboratory will give Dr. Kazi a unique opportunity to gain experience in enzyme purification and studying the kinetics and mechanisms of enzyme inhibition. The collaboration with Dr Raney will enable Dr. Kazi to carry out similar research at UAPB during the academic year following this summer program.
