Abstract Dr. Kazi

Investigation of Nucleotide Analogs for Inhabitation of NS3 Helicase from Hepatitis C Virus

This project involves the participation of Dr. Abul B. Kazi of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB as the principal investigator (PI), and Dr. Kevin D. Raney of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) as the mentor. The PI, in collaboration with the mentor, will carryout the proposed research at the UAPB campus during the spring semester of 2003, under the Arkansas BRIN Program. The primary goal of this collaborative project will be to enhance biomedical research capabilities at UAPB, increase participation of underrepresented minority students in biomedical research, and develop collaborative research proposals to attract external funding at the participating institutions. Dr. Kazi’s research at UAPB will focus on the study of small molecules for their inhibitory activities on the NS3 helicase and NS5b polymerase encoded by the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). The major objectives of this research are (1) chemical synthesis of novel nucleotide analogs and (2) evaluation of nucleotides as potential inhibitors of replication of the Hepatitis C Virus. Dr. Kazi will utilize his experience as a synthetic organic chemist for the synthesis, purification, and characterization of the nucleotide analogs.
