James W. Hardin, Ph.D.

James W. Hardin, Ph.D., Interim Director of the Saint Louis University Cancer Center, has extensive experience in establishing and managing National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers, initially at the University of Arkansas where he served as Associate Director of Research at the Arkansas Cancer Research Center from 1986 to 1998. Most recently he served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at the John Wayne Cancer Institute at Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California.

 Dr. Hardin received his doctoral degree in biochemistry from Purdue University and did postdoctoral fellowships in cellular and developmental biology at Harvard University and in cell biology at Baylor College of Medicine.

Dr. Hardin has also led and participated in numerous NCI cancer center accreditation site visits and has an extensive research and science background. He has held faculty appointments in the Department of Cell Biology at Baylor College of Medicine and in the Departments of Biochemistry, Medicine,  and Pathology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences from 1976 to 1998.

 Dr. Hardin has received several honors, written numerous manuscripts and book chapters, and serves on external review panels for the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, United States Department of Agriculture, and American Cancer Society.

 He has also had extensive experience in biotechnology, serving as chairman of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) patent committee and as a founding director of the V.A. Biomedical and Research Foundation. He also developed the UAMS patent policy, scientific fraud policy, and conflict of interest policy.
