BioVentures was designed to provide support services and a low-cost facility to startup companies in Arkansas. BioVentures provides support to startup, biotechnology-based companies until they are able to thrive in the open economy. The incubator program assists the entrepreneurs in locating economical working space, biomedical information, professional services, as well as shared services, which are often the overhead expenses that inhibit the success of new companies. The greatest values offered by Arkansas BioVentures are professional management at affordable cost, marketing and financial assistance, patent prosecution, and technical expertise from the University System’s faculty, staff, systems, facilities, and students. In fulfilling these purposes, Arkansas BioVentures greatly enhances the survival probability of the client companies. Arkansas Science and Technology Authority The Arkansas Science & Technology Authority (ASTA) was created by a state statute in 1983 with the mission to bring the benefits of science and advanced technology to the people and state of Arkansas by strategies to promote scientific research; technology development; business innovation; and math, science and engineering education. Back to top Biomedical Biotechnology Center In 1992, the UAMS College of Medicine established an informal working group to conduct a biotechnology opportunity analysis. The focus of this group has been to develop and retain Arkansas’ biotechnology resources and create collaborative alliances. This group is known as Biotechnology Arkansas, and the goals of the group are to continually build strong alliances between science and business, to foster the growth of biotechnology research and biotechnology-related companies in Arkansas, to build and maintain strong ties among state academic institutions and businesses, to serve as a biotechnology information resource for public officials, and to enhance the public’s understanding of biotechnology. In 1994, BBC was established at UAMS as a formal outgrowth of the College of Medicine’s interest to facilitate technology transfer and to create startup biotechnology companies and collaborative programs. Additionally, the BBC and its key partners, the Arkansas BioVentures Advisory Board, the Arkansas Biotechnology Association, and the Arkansas Department of Economic Development, focus their biotechnology commercialization efforts on new business development and collaborative programs such as agricultural-medicine, bioengineering, aquaculture, bioremediation, and molecular genetics to capitalize on Arkansas' strongest economic development attributes.
